The civil legal process in the UK can be a bit of a minefield with many rules and procedures to follow.
If you can’t afford legal representation, these rules and procedures can be confusing, so I have attempted to explain the legal process in the UK on a step-by-step basis.
None of this should in any way be considered as a substitute for professional and qualified legal advice; but if you are acting as a Litigant in Person, this section may help understand the different phases!
Before we get to the steps, you should acquaint yourself with the Civil Procedure Rules, which you can find HERE.
The steps/phases of the legal process (in general terms) can be found below, click on each, which will take you to the relevant page:
- Statement of Case/Pleadings
- Amends
- Applications
- Disclosure
- Witness Statements
- Hearing/Trial Preparation
- The Hearing/Trial
- Judgements
- Costs
If you are interested in the criminal process, you can find an excellent explanation of that here.
