Kaplan in scandal after wrongly telling would-be solicitors they had failed exams

British education company Kaplan has found itself in a scandal after wrongly informing 175 candidates who sat their Solicitors Qualifying Exams (SQE’s) they failed.

Kaplan is a UK-based company which provides courses and training across legal, banking, accountancy, tax and data industries. They offer the courses themselves, as well as offer the examination process.

Around 6,000 would-be solicitors sat their SQE’s in January 2024, with the results provided in March 2024. However, in April 2024, it was revealed due to calculation errors, 175 candidates who were informed they had failed – had in fact passed!

A joint response came from the Solicitors Regulatory Authority and Kaplan offering £250 compensation. However this somewhat dwarfs the nearly £2,000 cost of the exam!
